Our Winter Quarterly Meeting Highlighted Research Efforts from the US Forest Service, Oregon State University, and other collaborators on Community Forests nation wide.

The 2024 NWCFC Winter Quarterly meeting featured a set of presentations on Governance in Community Forests. The formal presentations included:

  • Equity in Access to Community Forest Benefits and Decision Making, from Lauren McCaskill

  • Community Engagement with Community Forests under Different Ownership Models in the U.S., from Kathleen McGingley

The meeting also included updates on:

  • Recent successes for community forests in Washington State, From Vanessa Kritzer, WALT

  • RCO Community Forest Program Funding, from Ben Donatelle, WA RCO

  • May Northwest Community Forest Coalition Biennial Forum, from Daniel Wear, SNW

Meeting Materials

  • Presentation: Equity in Access to Community Forest Decision Making

    Lauren McCaskill, with the Whidbey Camano Land Trust presented on her graduate research. Specifically highlighting governance approaches of the Pine Street Woods Community Forest as well as the Blackfoot Community Conservation Area.

  • Presentation: Community Engagement with Community Forests Under Different Ownership Models

    Kathleen McGinley, USDA Forest Service Research Scientist presented on the research done within a nation-wide study of over 90 community forests.

    Kathleen identified common characteristics and differences across ownership models of community forests region wide 0:54:30 - 01:26:30 in the recording here.

  • Update: Community Forest Success in Washington

    Vanessa Kritzer with Washington Association of Land Trusts shared a highlight on funding to community forests during the ongoing Washington Legislative Session

    WALT Will be Hosting a Webinar on March 29, 2024 from 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM to share details on the RCO Community Forest Program.

  • Washington RCO Community Forest Program

    Ben Donatelle with Washington Recreation and Conservation Office shared on the Available Community Forest Program Funding.

    During his presentation Ben highlighted that a webinar is posted online, answering the basic questions regarding the Community Forest Grant Program.
